Motivations and Knowledge of the Consequences of Practicing Prostitution among Brothel Based Commercial Sex Workers in Kaduna Metropolis

Abstract

Transactional sex is increasingly becoming a serious social and public health issue. Considering the health and psycho-social implications associated with the practice of prostitution, this study investigated the factors influencing female involvement in commercial sex and also examine their knowledge of the consequences of engaging in prostitution. Using questionnaire data was elicited from 390 female brothels based commercial sex workers selected from twelve (s 2) brothels spread in the four (4) LGAs that constitute Kaduna metropolis. The data obtained was analyzed using frequency distribution and percentages. The findings showed that poverty and peer influence were the dominant motivation for female involvement in commercial sex. Similarly, majority of the respondents (88.5%) indicated that they are aware that the practice of prostitution exposes them to risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections. Furthermore, 88.3% and 71.5% of the respondents disclosed that engaging in commercial sex increases their vulnerability to violence and trafficking respectively. On the basis of these findings it is recommended that enlightenment campaigns aimed at educating commercial sex workers on the risks and dangers of associated with prostitution should be intensified. In addition, programs and policies which seek to empower commercial sex workers and equip them with the necessary skills that will enable them make a living should be promoted by government and civil society organizations.
