Causes And Consequences Of Divorce Among Ethnic Nationalities Of Nasarawa State Nigeria

Abstract

Divorce is a concept that has gained attention in recent times due to growing spate of its occurrence around the world and in our society. A lot has been done to determine the extent of its impact in various societies, hut not much is known about its cause in Lafia metropolis. The aim of this paper was to find out the causes and consequences of divorce in the above mentioned area. It was found that poverty, lack of knowledge and sexual compatibility played a role in the occurrence of divorce and it came with high consequences. Some of the consequences are the effects on children, including depression and poor standard of living, consequence on women including economic implication and poor health and the consequence on society, including stress in kinship. It was recommended that education and enlightenment among other factors be provided to couples so as to help them cope with stressors that might make them seek for divorce from each other.
