Abstract

Only few women are found on the top cadre of the NPF like the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and no policewoman has ever attain the rank of Inspector General (IG) in the NPF. Also, there is inadequate research linking police rules to policewomen career development in Nigeria. Hence, this research explares the relationship between Police Act and lack of women on the top management cadre of the NPF. The research was a survey guided by dual systems theory of feminism. Qualitative methods involving key informant interview (Kil) and in-depth interview (IDI) were used. Five (s) and twelve (12) respondents were purposively and randomly selected from the rank of ASP to DIG for Kll and IDI respectively. Data were analysed through open content analysis. The study found no relatianship between Police Act and policewomen career development. Women are not found on IG rank because it is by appointment not by promotion. Hence, Police Act should be amended to include the appointment of female as an IG of police.
